Abstract

In oilfield drilling and production operations, stuck pipe periodically occurs despite all efforts of prevention. Pipe Recovery operations provide a method for recovery of the stuck pipe from the wellbore. The Backoff Tool provides a percussion shock wave within proximity of a particular threaded connection that will initiate a back-off (unscrewing) without causing permanent damage to the tubulars within the well. Due to the variable nature of routine Backoff Operations, multiple runs into the well to accomplish a successful pipe recovery are routine. This invention allows for a multitude of Backoff Tools to be run into the well simultaneously which can then be positioned and functioned selectively. This concept allows for Pipe Recovery Operations with improved reliability, efficiency, reduced operating time, and cost of successful operations.

Description:  To configure multiple Backoff Tools into one downhole string for Selectfire operations requires the addition of a thru wire to provide electrical communication to the Backoff Tools.  For the conventional exposed Backoff System an electrical thru wire can be incorporated thru the Wireline Head, Backoff Sub, and Bottom Sub.  For the enclosed HPHT Backoff Tool, the design allows for the incorporation of an electrical connection and thru wire through the Wireline Head, Backoff Tandem Sub, Backoff Housing, and Bottom Sub.  A second Backoff Tool wired with F2 Diodes can...
