Human-Autonomous Vehicle Guidance Adapter

Prior art on automated vehicles considers a world in which all vehicles are automated or

human-operated vehicles (HOVs) are simply an obstacle to avoid. A system is needed to

facilitate the integration of HOVs into the smart vehicle ecosystem. Disclosed here is a

human-autonomous vehicle guidance adapter. Utilization of this smart adapter allows HOVs to

communicate with automated vehicles and supports an automated infrastructure to improve

traffic flow and minimize safety hazards. For implementation, the “driver’s screen”, as

illustrated in Figures 1 through 4, can be either a heads-up display or full windshield projection.

A core application for the smart adapter is with automated intersections. Automated

intersection components communicate with automated vehicles on appropriate speeds and lanes

to use while crossing the intersection, without the need for visual signaling. The smart adapter

communicates the approach of an HOV. The intersection component communicates to the

human operator the correct action as the HOV approaches the intersection.

After communicating with all approaching vehicles the intersection controller sends the

human-operated vehicle a stop, slow, go command (A stop in this case). Another application is
