Abstract

Industrial abrasive discs are typically sold with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) layer on the backside. This PSA allows for only a single usage by the customer. The pad cannot be removed from the tool platen without damaging the disc, particularly if the disc has a microreplicated abrasive surface. Customers would prefer to use multiple versions of the same abrasive disc on the same tool. A magnetic holder instead of the PSA attachment would allow for abrasive disc changes without damaging the pad surface. This solution precludes the need for a customer to have dedicated tools for each version of microreplicated abrasive discs.

Magnetic Holder for Abrasive Discs Industrial abrasive discs are typically sold with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) layer on the backside. This PSA allows for only a single usage by the customer. The pad cannot be removed from the tool platen without damaging the disc, particularly if the disc has a microreplicated abrasive surface. Customers would prefer to use multiple versions of the same abrasive disc on the same tool. A magnetic holder instead of the PSA attachment would allow for abrasive disc changes without damaging the pad surface. This solution precludes the need for a customer to have dedicated tools for each version of microreplicated abrasive discs. In this proposed solution, an additional magnetic layer would be fixed on the backside of the abrasive pad and would also allow an easy mounting on a platen. The magnetic layer thickness should be between 0.5 and 0.75 mm, and would be fixed by a double sided adhesive layer to the backside of the abrasive pad. Feasibility has been demonstrated on a variety of laboratory grinding tools using glass and sapphire grinding substrates. Original construction with PSA backing:
