Abstract

With the rapid development of Internet and video technologies, an increasing number of people like watching various videos online for learning or entertainment. Therefore, existing video websites provide videos with different definition, such as ultra high definition, high definition, standard definition and so on for users to enjoy. However, sometimes when users have to use cellphones to watch videos online or download videos into mobile devices such as cellphones or Tablet PC with limited storage space, they prefer to enjoy the videos with high definition, but they also want to reduce data traffic consumption or save storage space of mobile devices. Furthermore, if a certain segment of a video is not attractive enough or contains useless information such as advertisements, users will be unwilling to select this section with high definition at the expense of data traffic consumption or storage space. To reduce data traffic consumption or save storage space of mobile devices without affecting user experience in watching or downloading videos, we propose a "mixed definition" mode for users to watch online or download into their mobile devices.

Therefore, more and more video websites are springing up and provide abundantly useful and interesting videos for users. In order to meet the requirements of different users, almost of existing video websites provide videos with different definition, such as ultra high definition, high definition, standard definition and so on, then users can select a kind of definition to enjoy. However, sometimes when users have to use cellphones to watch videos online or download videos into mobile devices such as cellphones or Tablet PC with limited storage space, they prefer to enjoy the videos with high definition, but they also want to reduce data traffic consumption or save storage space of mobile devices. Furthermore, if a certain segment of a video is not attractive enough or contains useless information such as advertisements, users will be unwilling to select this section with high definition at the expense of data traffic consumption or storage space. To reduce data traffic consumption or save storage space of mobile devices without affecting user experience in watching or downloading videos, we propose a “mixed definition” mode for users to watch online or download into their mobile devices. Based on popularity ratings, two ways can be used to generate videos with mixed definition. One is to capture different video streams from different definition resources and meanwhile combine them to generate a mixed definition resource. The other is to automatically reduce the definition based on ultra high definition resources when a certain segment that is not attractive enough or contains useless information. This "mixed definition" mode has its advantages in two aspects: Advantage 1: Ensure that the definition of videos is still high in very popular segments so as not to affect user experience. Advantage 2: Lower the definition in segments that are not attractive enough or contain useless information so as to reduce data traffic consumption or save storage space of mobile devices. 1. Firstly, it will check if there are multiple different definition resources for a certain video as the video resources could be different in various video websites. 2a. If there are multiple different definition resources for users to select, such as Ultra HD ( Ultra High Definition), HD-SDI (High Definition Serial Digital Interface) and SD-SDI (Standard Definition Serial Digital Interface) definition shown in Fig. 1, it will automatically capture different video streams from different definition resources based on the popularity ratings, and then generate a mixed definition resource.
