room, a video of the active speaker may be shown in the meeting by mapping the sound

direction of the speaker.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Video conferencing is increasingly widely used. Nevertheless, many businesses

do not have a high-fidelity telepresence system in their meeting rooms. In this case, a high

quality microphone is often provided on their meeting room desk for meeting support.

When multiple users in the same room join an online meeting with remote participants,

they may mute their own laptop computers and call the shared microphone to join the

meeting for room audio input and output. This avoids echo generation.

The microphone may join the meeting as a standalone attendee or as one of the

participants in the room. If the microphone joins as a standalone attendee, the active

speaker video show-in-meeting mechanism indicates that the microphone is speaking when

any of the participants in the room speak. If the microphone joins the meeting as one of the

participants in the meeting room, the video indicates that the participant is the speaker

when any of the participants in the room speak. In either case, the video fails to indicate

which active speaker in the meeting room is speaking. For example, if multiple people are

located in a single meeting room for a meeting, they may join one computer to the meeting

with the shared microphone. Users may switch to the computer camera (e.g., by physically

moving) when they want to talk, but this is inconvenient.

As described herein, a shared microphone may recognize a particular user who is

speaking in the room based on the direction from which the sound (speech) is received.

Modern digital array microphones have this capability. When multiple devices in a room

join a meeting and a shared digital array microphone is called, the locations of the devices

in the room may be calculated/determined. A device location map in the room may be

generated. When sound is captured by the shared microphone and its direction is

recognized, the device corresponding to the speaker is determined. The video of the

determined speaker may be displayed as video of the active speaker. The direction of the

sound may be combined with lip-sync recognition to further help determine the device of

interest.

A device location map of a room is generated as follows. Ultrasound is used to

determine where a meeting device is by leveraging the digital array microphone. When a

device joins a meeting, it emits ultrasound that contains meeting device/user ID and
