Many companies are moving to the cloud. Cloud computing provides many advantages, but even a short outage due to weather issues can be very costly.

Cloud providers have backup centers, but typically, an outage must occur before users are routed to the backup center. Cloud providers might also have backup generators and other disaster recovery measures to keep a location running during a power outage, but these measures are very costly for the provider.

The novel contribution is a system that monitors weather predictions for cloud center locations and moves users to a backup location before the occurrence of severe weather that is likely to cause an outage.

The system monitors weather predictions for cloud center locations. If severe weather that is likely to cause an outage is predicted (e.g., hurricane, severe snowstorm, etc.), the system automatically moves users to a backup location before the predicted time of the weather event. Because this move is planned, rather than occurring after an outage, data is replicated in advance of the move. The system returns users to the primary location after the severe weather passes.
