Non-Invasive Urinalysis via Spectroscopy

Often, a person may be dehydrated but be unaware of the situation because he/she is too busy to consider the symptoms, really do not know how much water to drink every day, the temperature outside is hotter than normal, etc. A person that does not keep a close eye on liquids intake throughout the day could go a long time without realizing that dehydration has set in. This can lead to health problems in both the near and long term.

A method or system is needed to non-invasively measure the hydration level of a person without that person taking any additional actions.

The novel solution is to use spectroscopic analysis on urine in a toilet to determine hydration levels and diagnose dehydration. The core novelty is to apply Raman spectroscopy within the existing toilet infrastructure, using the water in the toilet bowl as the sample. This approach provides a non-intrusiveand automatic method of urinalysis and takes continuous readings in real-time. It allows frequent diagnoses of hydration conditions and the ability to discern trends in hydration.

The system comprises a laser light directed to the surface of the water in a conventional toilet, using the reflected light before and after toilet use as input for a spectrographic analysis to determine hydration level of the patient.
