System and Method for Automated Career Redirection

Navigating career opportunities can be challenging for employees, especially at large organizations. Employees often become confused and discouraged about next steps and may choose to look for new opportunities elsewhere. Even if an employee believes the career path or career opportunities are clear, changing opportunities and skill requirements in a fluid market environment cause employees to be confused on the best career path going forward in light of the changes. Specifically, employees experience the following challenges when seeking opportunities for career advancement:

 The employee is unclear about when or why an organization changes its strategic skill requirements

 The employee is unclear about which new opportunities are interesting or which can advance a career

 The employee is unclear about how skill sets match new opportunities  The new opportunities are unknown to the employee or are not readily and easily

identifiable  The employee does not understand how (or whether) new opportunities will help

a career  The employee does not know what additional skills or capabilities are needed to

fulfill the new opportunity, if qualifications are not current

This results in untapped talent and unfulfilled opportunities. Employers are not able to provide the proactive level of support employees seek and, as a result, experience employee engagement issues and voluntary attrition. Businesses need a method to proactively support employee career changes.

The novel contribution is a method and system for personalized one-on-one cognitive career coaching for employees of an organization. The system is available at all times to provide precise one-on-one career coaching. It uses cognitive technology to proactively inform employees of new career opportunities based on changes in organization career opportunities, strategic initiatives, available skilled resources, and market demand for skilled resources.

The core novel concept is to have an automated career redirection system, which proactively notifies corporate employees of changes to organizational information that has an impact on career planning and development. This can include (but is not limited to) new career growth opportunities or new skill development requirements. The system recommends optimized career advice that proactively aligns an employee with the new career information available within the corporation.

The new information can include new opportunities or a list of skill development activities; employees can use this information to determine qualification for new opportunities, together with relevant interests, to optimize career options in the context of available opportunities within the corporation. Additionally, the system enables employers to optimize the fulfillment of opportunities, maximize the return on investment
