Disclosed is a method for detecting circulatory and respiratory function with smart phone sensors.

The disclosed method detects circulatory and respiratory function using only the touch sensitivity on a phone's touchscreen, a 3D accelerometer embedded in the phone, and the phone's microphone. This enables people in remote areas without traditional medical assistance to measure heartbeat, pulse, and breathing using only their phone. Many varieties of phones could be supported (i.e. several different sensors could accomplish the same task), and no traditional medical equipment would be required.

Technologies have been developed to measure heartbeat with a microphone that depend on specialized hardware to detect heartbeat when the phone is held to the ear. Instead, the disclosed method allows the phone to be held to the chest, like a stethoscope. The algorithm allows any low-cost phone with an accelerometer, touchscreen, or microphone to detect a heart beat. Multiple sensors could be combined for greater fidelity in measurements. Such an algorithm may be doubly useful in the developing world, because it allows a) low-cost phones to implement this feature, and b) removes the need for external equipment.
