Abstract

This article is an extension work of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No.62/428682. The cast PP (CPP) film introduced in U.S. Provisional Patent Application No.62/428682 is further laminated with a 19 um thick commercial BOPP film and forms a CPP//BOPP laminate. This laminate can provide benefits to the food packaging industry through easier converting, better optics, higher barrier and enhanced TD opening. It may offer up to 20% CPP down-gauging potential.

CPP//BOPP Laminated Structure Including Hydrocarbon Resins

Abstract: This article is an extension work of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No.62/428682. The cast PP (CPP) film introduced in U.S. Provisional Patent Application No.62/428682 is further laminated with a 19 um thick commercial BOPP film and forms a CPP//BOPP laminate. This laminate can provide benefits to the food packaging industry through easier converting, better optics, higher barrier and enhanced TD opening. It may offer up to 20% CPP down-gauging potential. Background: CPP//BOPP laminates are widely used in food packaging, for instance for bakery products, pasta and noodles, etc. The thickness of the OPP film is typically in the 17 µm – 20 µm range, while that of the CPP film is typically in the range 30µm-40µm. The gauge of the CPP and OPP films laminated together varies as a result of the specific requirements of the application. Downgauging the CPP film is a way to decrease cost and improve optics. However it reduces gas barrier and decreases stiffness which can result into shorter shelf life and lower efficiencies on converting and packaging equipment. CPP also brings a high TD tear strength due to the cast process, which can result into difficulties to tear in the TD direction.
