Abstract

When providing TouchPads for gaming laptops, our approach has generally been to "not get in the way" and allow users to disable the device when an external mouse is attached. Although the TouchPad is limited in its use for certain games, such as first-person shooters, a secondary (non-pointing) mode could be a valuable addition that enhances the gaming experience.

3. Short Summary

When providing TouchPads for gaming laptops, our approach has generally been to “not get in the way”

limited in its use for certain games, such as first-person shooters, a secondary (non-pointing) mode could

be a valuable addition that enhances the gaming experience.

4. Some Problems Solved

Examples of some of the problems addressed by the invention include:

The current approach is to disable the TouchPad when an external mouse is detected. Instead, we can

use the TouchPad in a non-pointing mode to provide additional benefit to the user. According to a user

survey conducted last year, user’s opinion related to gaming on a TouchPad received a unfavorable

ratings. The poor ratings were due to not being as fast or accurate as a mouse. Adding features that

enhance pointing on an external mouse versus using it as the input device while gaming could help

increase those numbers. Keyboards already have a game mode that can be toggled on or off, so a

TouchPad mode that can be toggled on or off would not be something out of the ordinary for a PC

gamer.
