Enabling Identity Usage Introspection and Billing within Smart DSN Memory

Data Source Name (DSN) memory that is capable of calculating and storing identity based usage information is also capable of reporting that usage information to sub-systems (either internal or external) responsible for introspection and billing. This allows Smart DSN Services (such as cloud deployments, management systems, billing solutions, etc.) to provide more in-depth introspection and more advanced billing solutions.

Described herein is a method for enabling identity usage introspection and billing within a smart DSN memory.

During a request to store source data, the ds processing unit determines the identity of the requester (e.g., an end user or a deployed service/application) as part of existing authentication and access control logic. This can occur via a user-supplied token, credential, or centralized identity management interactions. For this example, the assumption is that the requester has been authenticated and authorized to store source data.

On a successful write of the source data with updated identity usage information, the system communicates such usage updates via methods capable of being monitored. Such methods can include application programming interfaces, logging, metrics, or external message communication. Smart DSN Services can obtain this information to fully understand usage within the DSN memory and the consumption of usage on a per- identity basis.
