Introduction

Log loading/ unloading/ processing is a manual process which is repetitive in nature and time consuming. In order to save time and increase throughput, automated log handing system can be designed to perform operations automatically right from selecting log, grappling log, processing/cutting and then loading/ unloading etc.

Proposed Solution

System uses a 3D LADAR installed on the forestry vehicle to identify the log based on its shape and then to find out its 3 dimensional distance from the forestry vehicle. Video camera mounted on front side of operator cab will provide front view images on vehicle display. 3D LADAR will also paint the picture of front view but unlike video camera, it will also provide three dimensional locations of objects to the controller. Images taken by both 3D LADAR and display will be in sync with each other using image processing.

When operator selects the picture of logs shown on display, this video camera image will then be compared with LADAR image to find out 3 dimensional location of the log. Then the boom will eventually be guided towards the log to grapple it. In this, major task of aligning the boom on top of the log will be handled by automated system. The operator will then grapples the log using joystick buttons. While prioritizing/ selecting logs for processing, system can take into consideration following properties or quality parameters of log.
