Abstract

A user receives, via any consumer device (e.g., phone, screen, laptop, conference system, etc.), a personal accessibility experience based on the requirements set in a centralized manager. The requirements are not based on what the user needs (e.g., bigger fonts), but are instead based on what most impacts the user (e.g., for a visually impaired user). The centralized manager determines, based on negotiations of capabilities with the consumer device, the best accessibility features to enable and guarantee an excellent user experience.

ABSTRACT

A user receives, via any consumer device (e.g., phone, screen, laptop, conference

system, etc.), a personal accessibility experience based on the requirements set in a

centralized manager. The requirements are not based on what the user needs (e.g., bigger

fonts), but are instead based on what most impacts the user (e.g., for a visually impaired

user). The centralized manager determines, based on negotiations of capabilities with the

consumer device, the best accessibility features to enable and guarantee an excellent user

experience.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The foundation of collaboration is inclusion. For those with disabilities, there is

potential for them to be 'less included' or possibly excluded based on the type of

information being shared and the medium used. As described herein, a user-portable

accessibility profile may be bound to a unified and federated collaboration account (or any

other collaboration solution), which follows users as they transition from application to

application seamlessly. This allows users to focus on content, contribution, and

collaboration, rather than modifying settings or being excluded from interactive sessions.

Additionally, Section 508 Standards (reproduced below from https:/ www.access-

board.gov/guidelines-and-standards/communications-and-it/about-the-section-508

standards/section-508-standards) mandates that equal accessibility be provided for

everyone.

Section 508 Standards

The purpose of this idea is to implement section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of

1973, as amended (29 U.S.C. 794d). Section 508 requires that when Federal agencies

develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology, Federal

employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is

comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with

disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. Section 508 also

requires that individuals with disabilities, who are members of the public seeking

information or services from a Federal agency, have access to and use of information and

data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with

disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.

Overview

Portable, user-centric, accessibility profiles are provided that may integrate with

unified communications and collaborations applications and systems. These profiles may

be created from any device and leverage a centralized server for secure propagation to

another device(s) that a user accesses in the collaboration system. The system is built

around a centralized accessibility profile server. This server is a federated accessibility

profile manager that is comp...
