Abstract

The light stabilizer compound of formula (P-201), (P-202) or (P-203) disclosed in WO-A- 2011/029744, the light stabilizer compound of formula (I-1) or (I-2) disclosed in WO-A-2012/052377 and the light stabilizer mixture known from formulations (1), (2-1) and (2-3) of WO-A-2015/173190 are particularly useful as light stabilizers in plastic applications, typically polyolefins, used in agriculture and characterized by high levels of contamination from chemicals used in the agronomic practice during soil disinfection and growth of the crops.

wherein R1 is n-propyl and X1 is n-butyl, plus

(M-2)

wherein X2 is n-butyl; and wherein the weight ratio of Compound (M-1) to Compound (M-2) is e.g. 1:10 to 10:1, 1:5 to 5:1, 1:1 to 1:5, 1:1 to 1:3, in particular 1:1 or 1:2 or 1:3;

are particularly useful as light stabilizers in plastic applications, typically polyolefins, used in agriculture and characterized by high levels of contamination from chemicals used in the agronomic practice during soil disinfection and growth of the crops.

The most common plastic article for agricultural use is the thin film, typically obtained with the blow extrusion technology. Such a film can either be a mono-layer structure or a multi- layer structure, typically made of three, five or seven layers. This can lead to a film structure like A-B-A, A-B-C, A-B-C-B-A, A-B-C-B-D, A-B-C-D-C-B-A, A-A-B-C-B-A-A.

A, B, C, D represent the different polymers and tackifiers mentioned in the following.

However adjacent layers can also be coupled so that the final film article can be made of an even number of layers, i.e. two, four or six layers such as A-A-B-A, A-A-B-B, A-A-B-A- A, A-B-B-A-A, A-A-B-C-B, A-A-B-C-A-A and the like.

The thin films containing one of the aforementioned light stabilizer compounds or light stabilizer mixture M are typically made of virgin material, regrinds, edge trimmings or recyclates of low density polyethylene (from radical polymerization or of the linear type), linear low density polyethylene, metallocene linear low density polyethylene , C4-LLDPE, C8-LLDPE, medium density polyethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, ethylene-butyl acrylate copolymer, ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymer, and combinations thereof, of polypropylene (either homo- and co-polymer) or of high density polyethylene.
