Abstract

For MSR, it is necessary to swipe the card rather than holding it motionless in the card reader's slot, so that a change in magnetic flux can be obtained when the credit card is swiped. The magnetic stripe causes a varying magnetic flux and hence an induced current in the reader's circuits. If the card does not move, there is no induced EMF and none of the credit card's information is read. Because the card has to move a certain distance, the MSR requires not only a big magnetic head but also sheet metal stretching from one end to the other. Thus there is a metal piece, of approximately quarter wavelength, sitting on top of the device, where most of the antennas are located to get maximum radiation efficiency and conformal radiation pattern for base station access.

MSR Coupled Antenna for Wireless Applications

A magnetic stripe reader (MSR) is used for reading credit card info directly to mobile devices. To that

purpose, a magnetic head is placed in this mobile device.

For MSR, it is necessary to swipe the card rather than holding it motionless in the card reader’s slot, so

that a change in magnetic flux can be obtained when the credit card is swiped. The magnetic stripe causes

a varying magnetic flux and hence an induced current in the reader’s circuits. If the card does not move,

there is no induced EMF and none of the credit card’s information is read.

Because the card has to move a certain distance, the MSR requires not only a big magnetic head but also

sheet metal stretching from one end to the other. Thus there is a metal piece, of approximately quarter

wavelength, sitting on top of the device, where most of the antennas are located to get maximum radiation

However, the quarter-wavelength length of sheet metal can be used as an antenna without disturbing

MSR. The head is sensitive to MSR, but the sheet metal is sensitive to antenna. So it is the sheet metal

that was used and not the magnetic head, for antenna purpose. This can be done by three different

methods.
