Abstract:This disclosure relates to an improved pneumatic conveying process for the transportation of hydrocarbon resins in prill or pellet form allowing for retention of the physical integrity of the prill or pellet. Background

Hydrocarbon resins have many industrial applications, for instance, as tackifiers in the adhesive industry and/or as polymer modifiers (e.g., polyolefin modifiers). However, due to their very low molecular weight, hydrocarbon resins in prill or pellet form are brittle solids. The brittle nature of these resins creates practical challenges for their effective use in industrial operations, particularly when blending with other ingredients. For example, if the proper precautions are not taken, particle to particle interactions can generate fines and dust. In addition, the fines can accumulate and become sticky at moderate temperatures. This accumulation of fines can then plug transportation systems. For these reasons, conventional pneumatic systems are not adequate to convey hydrocarbon resins in prill or pellet form.
