Onboard diagnostic (OBD2) to NMEA 2000 (N2K) converter via Bluetooth

Abstract:

This invention would convert the OBD2 data to NMEA 2000 format, and transmit it wirelessly to a multifunction display (MFD) on a boat or vehicle using Bluetooth.

Description:

Most modern cars have a standard Onboard diagnostic (OBD2) port fitted providing SAE J1850 CAN Bus data. Other SAE protocols are also used. This invention would convert the OBD2 data to NMEA 2000 format, and transmit it wirelessly to a multifunction display (MFD) on a boat or vehicle using Bluetooth. This product is aimed at off-road vehicles, but could also be used for other cars or boats with car or truck engines fitted. An MFD already installed on the boat or vehicle would use its internal Bluetooth to connect to the convertor, which would then be selectable as a data source. This would give the MFD access to engine RPM, water temp, oil pressure, engine “Diagnostic Trouble Codes” (DTC’s), etc.

In the market, there are OBD2 Bluetooth tools to connect your smart phone / tablet, but this is currently limited to mobile apps. This invention would be a useful tool for offroad vehicles that have OBD2 ports and MFD’s with GPS navigation.  It could also benefit any vehicle or boat that uses an OBD2 port, possibly in conjunction with SAE J1939, ISO 11783, ISO 11992, ISO 11898 or NMEA 2000-type communication buses.
