AUTOMOBILE FLOOR CARPET STIFFENER

When designing a new vehicle, often the last part to be

designed is the main floor carpeting. This makes it very

difficult to have an appealing aesthetic look, while also

meeting all the functionality that is expected.

Method

Fig 1. Traditional approach Fig 2. New approach

To stiffen the carpet we removed the localized area of foam

and attached a molded injected bracket that attaches [A.]

at a minimum of 2 points, as an end item to the body

interior structure. [B.] B-side ribbing for strength and

support. [C.] Left cut out pass through(s) for build

variance in body wire harnesses.

Due to the late change this created to the production

build we had to be creative of how to have a solid

attachment scheme. Due to the problem and given timing

we could not impact any other subsystems.
