Abstract

A coin handling product can accept, store and dispense coins. The coin handling product includes a validator which validates and denominates coins. Once coins are validated, they are sent to a storage area if they are deemed acceptable. Unacceptable coins are often rejected and returned to a user. The product can also dispense stored, acceptable coins as change to a customer. The coin handling product generally includes a cassette. The cassette can include coin tubes for holding coins in a stable stack. The coin handling product may include a validator, and a removable cassette which includes a plurality of coin storage tubes, and means for dispensing coins from the storage tubes.

In a coin handling product, information about coin inventory in a cassette is vital for proper functioning of the product. Currently many sensors and methods are used to obtain coin inventory information from the coin cassette; however, the sensors are situated in the validator, and accuracy and reliability may be improved. Sensors located in the cassette may provide more reliable data; however, they necessitate a physical mechanical and electrical connection between the cassette and coin validator modules. A novel way of using wireless power and data transfer to connect coin validator and cassette modules is proposed. The proposed solution uses induction coils to transfer power, and a wireless data connection between modules.

Problem Description

In a coin handling product, the number of coins in the coin cassette must

be known for the coin changer to function properly. It must manage coin

inventory to allow payment to a customer, and to keep space to accept

coins from customers. If the inventory runs low, then the product has to

operate under exact change mode which discourages customers from

using the machine. If the coin product accepts a large quantity of coins of

a particular denomination, the space allotted for that particular

denomination may become full, and the coin product may not be able to

accept money from a customer due to lack of storage capacity.

Currently, various sensors and methods are employed from the coin validator module to determine an inventory of coins in the cassette.

Reliability of the sensors and methods may be improved. Having sensors

in the cassette may improve coin detection significantly. In addition, fault

detection sensors may be added such that the detection of proper coin

payout or jams may be identified and reported to the main module.

Unfortunately, existing sensors require a direct connection to the

validation module. The existing sensors may further require mechanical

and electrical connections between the validator and cassette in order to

deliver power to, and receive data from, the cassette. In addition, in some coin products, the cassette is a removable module, which is

removed from the coin handling product chassis often. The frequent
