Abstract

A cost effective aerostatic thrust bearing for low to moderate load capacities comprises a cost effective damping mechanism to the system. The damping function is provided by carefully selected elastomeric elements that also serve to provide compliance for the bearing to track the thrust runner, as well as serve as the sealing element to the air supply system.

BACKGROUND

The present disclosure relates generally to bearings, and more particularly to aerostatic thrust bearings.

To increase unit load capacity without sacrificing too much air flow, air bearings can employ air pockets or recesses. However, air pockets lead to negative damping in the air film, which could lead to an instability in the bearing if the negative damping is not offset by presence of other damping mechanisms in the system.

Therefore, there exists a need for an improved damping mechanism in the system.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present disclosure proposes a novel aerostatic thrust bearing having a damping arrangement. FIG. 1 illustrates the design of a cross-section of the proposed thrust bearing. The design uses two axial elastomeric O-rings and a radial elastomeric O-ring. The radial O-rings act as seals for the passages that connect the inlet air plenum to the bearing air plenum. The O-rings also provide axial compliance and axial damping to the bearing. A radial O-ring provides additional damping to the system, as well as stiffness in the radial direction.
