Method and System for Cognitive Production of Tactile Images

Braille is still a crucial tactile writing system utilized by the blind or visually impaired, while reading text. However, braille does not support the blind or visually impaired to explore visual images or diagrams.

The existing art available includes methods to produce tactile images over and above the 3D picture books and electronic books. The methods include representing graphical image content by generating a corresponding pattern of raised tactile elements or employing an optical-to-tactile converter for representing images in a three-dimensional relief format. Interactive tactile display for computer screens are also available. However, the existing art is unable to handle tactile images with associated complexities for different users with different levels of tactile sensitives. For instance, the present methods do not account for the complexities involved with a user with little or no experience in touching and experiencing senses of tactile images.

Thus, there exists a need for a method and system that recognizes the different tactile sensitivity skills of users and enhances tactile skill development method and progresses within various levels of tactile sensitivities.

Disclosed is a method and system for cognitively translating display screen images into tactile images with different levels of details, enabling users with different tactile sensitivity skills to recognize the tactile images. The method and system employs numerous image transformers to transform display screen images into tactile images and assists in training blind and visually impaired users with different levels of tactile experience to recognize the tactile images and map the tactile images to the associated image descriptions.

In accordance with the method and system, a tactile image is generated from a display screen image by image transformers. Image transformation, therefore, includes methods such as, but not limited to, generating a contour of an image, 2D to 3D conversion wherein the third dimension is mapped to the pixel brightness, up- sizing/downsizing, background removal, producing an image with basic levels of the details, reproducing the texture or the surface of the objects in an image and reproducing the color and temperature of the object in an image. The system begins by building a tactile image recognition scale, wherein the tactile image recognition scale establishes a mapping between image characteristics and level of details associated with a given tactile image. Typically, the tactile image recognition scale is defined with fuzzy categories, wherein the fuzzy categories include, but is not limited to, a basic level, an intermediate level and an advanced level. While a tactile image categorized as a basic level category includes sufficient details to uniquely identify the tactile image, an advanced level category includes fine/granular details of the tactile image.
