Background: Many diesel, gasoline, and natural gas engines today utilize Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) to aide in
the control of in‐cylinder combustion temperatures, in‐cylinder NOx formation, and total engine fluid economy. In an air system where EGR is utilized the EGR gases join fresh air in an engine function referred to as EGR mixing. The way by which EGR mixing occurs can lead to improved homogeneity of the air and EGR mixture. Other intentional or unintentional changes caused by EGR mixing include air stream disturbances, regions of varying temperature, and regions of non‐linear air system restriction. Description:
As shown in the attached illustration and described below, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) mixer that utilizes a nozzle diffuser arrangement in the mixing chamber, is disclosed.
Disclosed is an engine air system comprising an EGR mixer with nozzle diffuser (shown in Figure 1). The EGR nozzle diffuser can either be a stationary or having a varying position in the EGR pipe. The air system will typically also include an EGR pipe (shown in Figure 1), fresh air pipe (shown in Figure 1), intake air plenum (not shown), cylinder head (not shown), and engine cylinder (not shown).
