Abstract

Current articulating clip appliers store clips proximal to the end effector and distal to the articulation joint, which lengthens the region being articulated. Packing clips more efficiently in the distal region of an articulation joint could reduce the articulating length of a clip applier. This can be achieved through a system of vertically stacked clips contained in an interchangeable cartridge unit.

ARTICULATING CLIP APPLIER VERTICAL CLIP STACK: INTERCHANGEABLE CARTRIDGE UNIT

SUMMARY

Current articulating clip appliers store clips proximal to the end effector and distal to the articulation joint, which

lengthens the region being articulated. Packing clips more efficiently in the distal region of an articulation joint

could reduce the articulating length of a clip applier. This can be achieved through a system of vertically stacked

clips contained in an interchangeable cartridge unit.

DESCRIPTION

A novel method for tighter packing of clips in a multiple clip articulating clip applier, contained in an

interchangeable cartridge unit. The stacked clips would be placed distal to the articulation joint to allow for

maximum maneuverability of the jaws.

The cartridge unit holds six clips stacked vertically that can be advanced using any passively driven system. The

cartridge locks into place and has cutouts for the clip pusher to load the bottom clip into the jaw ramps.

Once all the clips in the cartridge have been fired, the unit can be removed and a new cartridge unit can be loaded.

This allows the end effector to be reused multiple times.
