Abstract

In articulated frame vehicles, like foresty vehicles there is often a pivot point in the middle joint, which allows front and rear frame to twist in relation to each other about a horizontal axis substantially in the travel direction. This feature is required because the frame must adopt to the terrain during driving. However, this kind of middle joint allows each frame part to tip over if the middle joint is not locked or stabilized especially if the machine is equipped with boom or crane which can cause a lateral moment to the machine. There are lot of different solutions how to lock or stabilize the middle joint. One example of a stabilizing system is described in patent FI 121705 B. This uses hydraulic pressure and cylinders to adjust the stabilizing torque in the machine frame.

This solution aims in controlling the stabilizing torque to limit the torque to the maximum capacity of the supporting frame. The system uses inclination sensors in the supporting frame to sense the frame position and angle sensor in the middle joint to sense the steering angle. These sensor signals are then used to calculate the maximum allowed stabilizing force and prevent overpressure in the hydraulic stabilizing system, which could cause tipping of the supporting frame.
