The novel contribution is a system that detects that a vehicle is on during fueling and automatically discontinues the gasoline pump. When the system identifies that the engine of the vehicle is on, during fueling, the gasoline fuel pump discontinues its operations, and notifies the operator.

In one embodiment, an acoustic/accelerometer sensor for engine operation vibrations is located at the fuel pump hose tip (i.e., nozzle). When the system detects that the intensity of vibration and the signal signature matches that of an operating engine, the system automatically halts the gas pump operation and sends a notification to the user.

In another embodiment, a laser sensor detects vibrations from the vehicle. The sensor controller sends a signal to the fuel pump and to the notification device to ensure gasoline is not poured the car.

In another embodiment, the system detects an engine-on state from the car's exhaust (e.g., an infrared (IR) detector can identify hot fumes).
