HYDRAULIC CHECK VALVE WITH TEMPORARY HOLD OPEN FEATURE

Check valves are commonly used in hydraulic systems to prevent the flow in one direction of a

hydraulic system (Figure 1). When a hydraulic system is filled with fluid for the first time these check

valves impede the flow of fluid into some areas of the hydraulic system resulting in trapped air causing

performance issues. Often to permit better filling of the hydraulic system a bleed hole is put into the

check valve but this results in compromised performance of the check valve.

The solution proposed is to eliminate the Bleed Hole shown in Figure 1 and add a Hold Open

Device shown in Figure 2 and 3. This Hold Open Device holds the Moving Poppet away from the Cap to

create a fluid path when the Check Valve is initially installed in the system. This permits better initial

filling of the hydraulic system and avoids trapped air.

The Hold Open Device is made from a wax or plastic material that dissolves or melts when the

hydraulic system is up to normal operating temperature after which the check valve functions normally.

Figure 3: Check Valve with Hold Open Feature Top View Conclusion Use of a Check Valve with the proposed dissolving/melting Hold Open Feature allows use of Check Valve without a Bleed Hole and does not compromise the initial fill of the hydraulic system.
