Abstract

This technical disclosure proposes the design of adjustable socket to accommodate variety of bolt sizes. In conventional sockets, either user has to screw the outer ring to adjust the socket size or continuous axial force application is necessary to hold the bolt head properly. This can be time consuming and inconvenient for operators on assembly line who have to adjust the ring number of times for variety of bolts and apply large torque. The proposed concept gives a mechanism of socket to automatically adjust the jaws to the required size of the bolt by just pulling & releasing the spring loaded sleeve with minimum operator efforts. The proposed socket gives following advantages over conventional sockets, automatic size adjustment and continuous axial force application during service with grue and locking tab mechanism

Stage 1- Retract sleeve to upward position, Fingers slide out with Coil spring pushing them at inside angle.

Stage 2- Place it on the Hex bolt

Stage 3- Release the sleeve on the bolt Stage 4- The fingers move towards the Hex bolt edges and touch the top end of it. The coil spring keeps the locking tab from interfering with sleeve.

Stage 5- The locking tab enters the grue and locks the sleeve in place.
