BACKGROUND

Center pin flapper type check valves are used in bleed pipes to mitigate the risk of broken pipe scenario. The flappers are hinged at the center pin and open up during normal operation. The maximum opening of the flappers is limited to minimize flutter by installing a stopper in the form of a solid pin. During broken pipe scenario, the downstream of the flapper has higher pressure and forces the flapper to close preventing reverse flow. However, due to fluctuations in the flow field, the two flappers of the valve flutter during operation. This leads to wear and subsequent failure.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Proposal of this invention is to use a magnet at the stopper to arrest the flutter in flappers. The stopper is made hollow instead of solid cylindrical pin. The magnet is placed inside the hollow stopper. The strength of the magnet is adjusted such that the flutter is arrested and at the same time they close easily when there is an adverse pressure gradient. Magnets like Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) or Alnico (Aluminum Nickel Cobalt) can be used. These magnets can with stand up to 1000 °F. Generally, the flappers are of magnetic materials (SS), if not these can be coated with magnetic material (ferrites).
