Abstract

This article proposes a system and method for integrated cellular manufacturing module during transportation .Cellular manufacturing is a process of manufacturing which is a subsection of just-in-time manufacturing and lean manufacturing encompassing group technology. The goal of cellular manufacturing is to move as quickly as possible, make a wide variety of similar products, while making as little waste as possible. Cellular manufacturing involves the use of multiple "cells" in an assembly line fashion. Each of these cells is composed of one or multiple different machines which accomplish a certain task.

Shortcomings in the existing solutions Based on demand forecast, or based on exact order amount, the manufacturers ships the finished products to the retail shop. At the same time, the manufacturers also purchases various raw materials from different suppliers to make the final product. The mode of transportation can be Ship, Train, Truck or combination of one or more transportation mode. The transportation of such materials/finished products needs a lead time, For example, material is being transported from location A to Location B, and it needs around two days.

At the same time, there can be some additional difficulties, like road block, bad weather, and legal problem etc. This may cause additional delay and there is no existing system which strives to solve this problem without any productive time being lost.

Cellular manufacturing module during transportation ensures that finished or semi-finished product can be manufactured during transportation. This way transportation time can be productively utilized.

Proposed Solution Following diagram (Figure 1) talks about a train based transportation system. Where total transportation duration is 2 days, some of the containers are having container specific cellular manufacturing module, where material movement will take place within the container, and some are centralized cellular manufacturing module, where cross container material movement will take place during manufacturing process.

Following diagram (Figure 2) is an example of cellular manufacturing module. The product manufacturers can also design required numbers of containers with the above facility, this cellular manufacturing module needs to be accommodated within the within the container. The cellular manufacturing module can also be replaced with another cellular manufacturing module or can be removed from the containers.
