Existing social messaging/networking/collaboration solutions display messages/feeds in a tabular or feed-style format that forces the user to sift through all messages and feeds. As the number of messages/feeds grows so does the visual clutter. This article defines a method, information processing system, and computer readable storage medium for nesting, prioritizing, and visualizing social communications in the form of a message tree so that visual clutter can be eliminated. 3. Disclosed are a method, information processing system, and computer readable storage medium for nesting, prioritizing, and visualizing social communications in the form of a message tree.

In the times we live in, dealing with an insurmountable volume or backlog of messages (e.g. emails and feeds) is a reality. An overload of messages often causes stress. Existing social messaging/networking/collaboration solutions display messages/feeds in a tabular or feed-style format that forces the user to sift through all messages and feeds. As the number of messages/feeds grows so does the visual clutter. Moreover, existing systems and/or prior art does not consider human emotion as an important dimension for categorizing messages.

Hence, in order to reduce stress and ensuring important communications are never overlooked, a solution using a self-organizing view is needed that can reduce clutter by nesting (create a hierarchy of), prioritizing, and visualizing messages in a way that high priority messages are never out of sight of the user. The self-organizing view is created by nesting and visualizing messages based on dimension, area of interest, emotion, and thereafter prioritized based on date, time, sender, tone, and content. Moreover, since every user is different in the way they would want to visualize and prioritize messages a method and a system is provided to configure the nesting and priority rules for building and visualizing the message tree. Additionally, humans are often driven by emotions and nesting based on the dominant emotion of a message would enable the user to quickly identify important messages.

The method to nest, prioritized, and visualize social communications is illustrated using an operational diagram FIG. 1. Message(s) 306 is received at step 104. The dimension analyzer 308 (FIG. 3) identifies the dimension for each message as per the rules defined in node/tag definitions 326 by inspecting the sender and content of the received message(s) 306 at step 106 and tags the message(s) with the relevant node/tag definition. For example, the dimension analyzer, after analyzing the sender and content of a message, could typically resolve the dimension to be “Work” or “Home” as defined by the rules in node/tag definitions 326.
