The present invention is an apparatus that will minimize damage to the workpiece from inaccurate hammer impacts by having a polymer dampener surround the hammer target. The rubber mat has a thru-hole located near the center. A nail is driven through thru-hole. The thru-hole is split by a gap which allows the mat to be removed once the nail has been embedded into the contact surface. This allows a smaller thru-hole, thus increasing the dampening protection of the rubber mat.

How to protect a work-piece from damage due to inaccurate hammer strokes?
An inexperienced craftsman can experience difficulty in contacting a nail with every stroke of the hammer. These unsuccessful blows can impact the work-piece thus causing damage. What is needed is a way to protect a work-piece from damage due to inaccurate hammer strokes.
Illustrated in Figure 1 is a rubber mat 110 that has a thru-hole 120 located near the center. A nail 130 is driven through thru-hole 120. Thru-hole 120 is split by a gap 140 which allows the mat to be removed once the nail has been embedded into the contact surface. This allows a smaller thru-hole, thus increasing the dampening protection of the rubber mat 110.
Rubber mat 110 is constructed of a material that offers considerable dampening. Rubber mat 110 is also of considerably size as to cover an area surrounding nail 130 that would be susceptible to hammer strikes. Rubber mat 110 offers a buffer for the craftsperson when attempting to hammer-strike a nail. Once nail 130 has been driven into the contact surface rubber mat 110 may be removed and used with the next nail.
