As cell phones reduce in size there is less opportunity for buttons for managing the user interface.
Cel1 phones with external stub antennas can be designed such that the stub antenna rocks in five directions (forward, back, left, right, and up/down) using mechanical switches.
Combined with a software algorithm to manage the user interface the use of this 'moveable' antennae allows the user to manipulate the cell phone feature set while holding the device in one hand.
The ability for a cell phone (or pager) having a protruding stub antenna that can serve in a dual capacity (antenna and multi-directional switch) is deemed unique and patentable.
