During a roll-over simulation, it is essential to observe the motion of the occupant relative to the vehicle. This requires the capability to observe relative motion inside the moving vehicle. The traditional explicit finite element software can only output the motion projected onto a local reference system. This corresponds to a global motion observed in the projected directions. When driving a vehicle for a distance of 20 m, the output of the driver's motion projected onto any local system can thus show a displacement of 20 m, while in fact the motion relative to the vehicle may be only a few inches.
