Abstract
As pagers get smaller, more and more factors work against long, economical battery operation. The fact that some of the new pagers tend to fall, in the user's mind, into the category of a pen or pencil makes them unlikely to think about turning the unit off when the day is through. When the pager is of a form factor that it will not stand unsupported in an upright position, this can be remedied as follows: Equip the pager with a miniature position sensitive switch (such as a mercury switch) mounted in the radio, such that when the radio is placed on a flat sur- face, contact is broken. The switch is placed in series between the battery and the radio circuitry ahead of the on-off switch, (if on-off is used).

AUTOMATIC POWER SHUT OFF FOR PAGER

As pagers get smaller, more and more factors work against long, economical battery operation. The fact that some of the new pagers tend to fall, in the user's mind, into the category of a pen or pencil makes them unlikely to think about turning the unit off when the day is through. When the pager is of a form factor that it will not stand unsupported in an upright position, this can be remedied as follows:
Equip the pager with a miniature position sensitive switch (such as a mercury switch) mounted in the radio, such that when the radio is placed on a flat sur- face, contact is broken. The switch is placed in series between the battery and the radio circuitry ahead of the on-off switch, (if on-off is used).
Another application would be in parallel with the on-off switch such that either automatic on-off or a manual override to the on condition could be provided, allowing the pager to be on while lying on a flat surface.
