New ideas in the field of paging have put greater demands on pager design. Pagers need to perform many new functions, including making more intelligent decisions. Yet, as always, battery life is still a prime consideration in its design.
One solution that will aid in allowing pagers to make more intelligent decisions, and, at the same time help extend battery life is lo add a sensor to enable the pager to detect the presence of the person wearing it. The sensor may work as follows (refer to diagram):
The pager would contain a set of mercury switches situated to detect motion in the three dimensions. Also to aid in the decision making, an infrared sensor would detect the body heat of the wearer. The two inputs connected to a control logic circuit would allow the pager to make an intelligent decision as to the presence of its user.
The information about the presence of its user can allow the pager to make decisions, such as to alert or just store the message, or to shut itself off, thereby extending battery life.
