Abstract
One of the concerns for promoting the sales of the ideographic character pager in the Far East market such as Hong Kong,Taiwan and Peoples Republic of Chinais that it requires two bytes, 7 bits each, to transmit a word or character. The air time in some of the areas such as Hong Kong is getting more and more expensive due to the heavy RF channel traffic. A statistical study conducted in Hong Kong indicated that approximately 90% of the Paging calls are a surname followed by a gender and followed by a phone number. How to satisfy the90% of the paging calls byamethod whichdoes not take toomuch airtime is a problem need to be resolved.

A highly efficient protocol as delineated in Fig. 1 & 2 will resolve the aforementioned problem. The air time will be cut significantly if this method is adopted.
The ideographiclnumeric mixed mode will be set up as a special page type. Just like the alpha or numeric, any page address could be programmed with the mixed mode page type. For a particular address which was programmed as a mixed mode address, the signal processor will decode the message per the format specified in Fig. 2.
Refer to Fig. 2. The flag bit is a 1 to indicate a message codeword. The surname consists of 14 bits. The gender consists of two bits which could be programmed to display any gender as desired. The example deline...
