Abstract

Finger depression on the cursor pad shown in Fig- ure 1 couples the micro controller to the resistive strip which in torn is at a specific voltage level corresponding to the position that the voltage divider is contacted. A high voltage is present at the far let?, a low voltage is present at the far right, and a medium voltage is present in the middle. Characters A thru Z correspond with high to low voltages. When the A to D converter sees a medium voltage it translates this information to the con- troller which in tams outputs to the display a character in the mid range of the characters. (L, M, N, 0, or P) For example, if an "N" shows on the display when the cursor pad is depressed, then by sliding your finger slightly to either the left or right the display will change to an M or 0 corresponding to the order of the alpha- bet. Once the desired character is displayed the finger is removed from the cursor pad and the select switch is CHARACTERSCROLL depressed to save the character in the message being created.
