USER ROAMING PERSONALITIES
by John Clark
User roaming personalities provides a mechanism for wireless communications devices to change their personality based on geographic location. This will allow for maximum customer configuration and spawn several customer service related activities. For instance, service providers could provide internet access to the subscriber personality database allowing customer to change their own information. Service centers could also provide more traditional configuration mechanisms.
The feature operates in the following manner: Subscriber X roams into area 1 and upon affiliation receives personality information pertinent to area 1. The ability to receive this type of information leads to several other business opportunities. The subscriber unit would not require such a large eeprom as information could be loaded directly into the device's RAM. The device's firmware could be much smaller as only critical communication
software would be required. The same mechanism that receives personality information could receive firmware for this type of personality operation. Reliability could be increased in this manner as malfunctions of personality software could be corrected silently without customer or service intervention.
