METHOD TO ALLOW MULTIPLE VOCODERS IN A DIGITAL RADIO SYSTEM

In present systems, all user populations are restricted to using a single vocoder for a given channel rate. This restricts the system's ability to provide:
* Optimizations for different speakers.
Examples: multiple languages, gender differences
* Optimizations for different environments, such as high background noise or equipment differences.
* Experimental vocoders.
* User-originated, modified or personalize vocoders.
* Smooth upgrades to new vocoders.
The invention is to add the sightiling and call management necessary to permit multiple vocoders to simultaneously co-exist in a digital radio system.
There are currently two forms of prior art that are relevant to this invention. The first is GSM Cellular, which uses a bit in the call signaling header to select a channel rate and corresponding vocoder (3: 1 or 61 I) on a call by call basis. It does not provide the ability to use different, same-rate vocoders. A second prior art, relevant to the implementation described below is in SmartZone systems, which can map DIU capabilities to Talkgroup characteris- tics and can dynamically assign DlUs to the requirements of a given call.
In order to permit an Astro/APCO radio system to support multiple vocoders, the existing call signaling and control mechanisms would need to be modified. The call signaling would need to add a vocoder ID to the header...
