Sensor Based Power Management

Disclosed here is an approach to power management that utilizes sensors to determine when the system should be put into a low power utilization mode. This method is an attempt at defining a more superior scheme to determining when a system is, or is not, in use.

The usual method used by power management schemes in current operating systems is via an inactivity timer. As tasks on computers become more widely varied, however, this is not an ideal way to determine actual system usage. In the case where someone is monitoring the screen for updates, power management may engage while the user is watching the screen.

In the case where a user abruptly gets up and walks away from a system, it may take several minutes or hours for the computer to realize that the user has left. By using sensors to detect the user's presence, a better decision can be made in determining when power management should take action.

By using an infrared beam or motion sensor mounted on a desk or on a monitor, it can quickly be determined when the user is no longer in front of the terminal. This information can be used as part of a power management scheme to put devices into a low power state. This also allows a user to watch their computer monitor (such as when watching a DVD movie, waiting for e-mail, stock updates, etc.) without having to shake the mouse or press keyboard buttons to keep the system from going into low power mode.
