Automatic Provisioning of Passwords for Personal Computer Accessories

  Disclosed is a technique to significantly increase the password security with personal computer accessories, such as wireless access points. This invention has two key elements: 1) The ability, at initial setup time, for the setup software to provide the user with the opportunity to use the personal computer operating system password for the accessory, e.g. wireless access point or application software and 2) The ability for the accessory or application software to periodically access the personal computer operating system password, and if changed, to update the password in the accessory device or application software.

   With the rapidly decreasing costs for wireless Local Area Networks (LANs), and with the tremendous ease of installation of such networks, they are rapidly proliferating. These are used both for personal use, for home office use, and for business usage. Because of the ease of installation of these LAN's, significant security features been provided but not successfully implemented.

   IEEE 802.11 has specified a standard for wireless networks that has met the goals of the standards committee: 1) Easy to install and use, 2) use of technology that is intrinsically based on low cost components (and has every expectation to be come even less expensive with time) and, 3) like it's parent standard, IEEE 802.3, promises to become ubiquitous because of it's high speed (11 Mbps) and its "Networking for Dummies" simplistic approach to networking and installation.
