This invention provides a maintenance OS, a built in light weight Linux in personal computers, in Pre-Windows environment with a set of abundant maintenance that has network connectivity, GUI, I18N and L10N support, great flexibility and extensibility to add system management functions easily. 1. We build a slave USB flash memory chip on the mainboard. The chip is connected to the USB hub and stores the light weight Linux system. 2. We build the light weight Linux using compression technologies and system cutting technologies. 3. We develop a maintenance OS update software both in Windows environment and in Pre-Windows environment to update the Linux system that resides in the fixed flash memory.

NoveltyInvent a novel approach to build Pre-Windows system. The first step is to fix a USB slave flash memory chip on the mainboard with a write protection switch. The second step is to build a light weight Linux system into the chip as the Pre-Windows operation system. Some compression methods are introduced or developed to reduce the Linux system size.
Integrate TCPA subsystem to build a maintenance OS update software in both Windows and Pre-Windows environment.
Introduce the embedded Linux system into the Pre-windows environment to manage personal computer system, such as user self support, system recovery, remote diagnose.
Along with the fast information technology evolution, there are more and more cyberspace problems that are difficult to solve. World wide Internet tends to be the best propagate method for virus. Many uneducated users are crashing their computers due to improper operation. All these things make system management more and more important for computer users.
However, the current most popular personal computer operation system, MS Windows is easily to be affected by virus or crashed by improper operation, such as delete file or format logical disk driver. When the system is corrupted, the user usually can not restart Windows any more and launch diagnostic application to recover it. A survey shows that half of IT cost is due to system recovery. How to protect against such computer disaster is one of the key issues to meet the user requirement and lower TCO. Therefore, it is crucial for personal computer vendors to provide system management functions in Pre-Windows environment. The following is a list of technologies and applications to save the user when the main OS, Windows is corrupted.
1. Recovery / Bootable CD. This technology have two inherent shortcomings. Firstly, it can only bring the system to preload status and loses all the software installed by the user and sometimes may destroy important data or documents. Secondly, it is a big burden for the user to keep the CD, especially when travelling.
