Abstract

Disclosure is the IBM Netfinity System MIF (Management Information Format) file. The IBM Netfinity System MIF provides a specification for the local and remote management of a machine's (system) PCI (Peripheral Component Interface) slots. The IBM Netfinity System MIF specifies the interface between a Management Application and an IBM Netfinity System Service. Refer to the IBM Netfinity System MIF at the end of this document. The MIF file specifies a user-friendly slot number, slot type and a slot subtype (standard, embedded or hot plug). The IBM Netfinity System MIF file contains similar information as found in the DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force) DMI (Desktop Management Interface) System Groups. The IBM Netfinity System MIF contains one additional attribute, namely the slot subtype. The Management Application and IBM Netfinity System Service communicate through DMI. The DMI Service Provider handles the remoting of the interface so that the Management Application and IBM Netfinity System Service can be running on two different machines. An IBM Netfinity System Service instruments the IBM Netfinity System MIF and provides information for the Management Application. The information includes an enumeration of all the PCI slots on a machine, a user-friendly slot number and the slot subtype (standard, hot plug or embedded). The Management Application uses the information provided by an IBM Netfinity System Service. The Management Application can enumerate all the slots on a machine and determine which slots are hot pluggable
