Abstract

Given the technology of short range wireless networking ("Bluetooth") combined with pervasive computing devices such as PDA's, a system could be implemented as follows: The user enters their shopping list into the PDA, either by checking off items in a list provided by their preferred store, or by entering items into a generic list application. When the customer enters the store, the PDA interfaces with the store system, which reads and sorts the list based on the current location of items in the various aisles in the store, thereby providing the user with the optimum route through the store. This is of additional use if the customer is in a store other than their usual location. Additionally, the system can identify out of stock items and suggest alternatives. Without this invention, the customer is dependent on static aisle labeling and personal knowledge for navigating through the store. 1
