Disclosed is a device to provide a mobile laptop computer user the ability to exchange a depleted battery with a fresh battery, without requiring the laptop computer to be rebooted or put into a hibernation state. When running a mobile laptop computer (e.g. IBM Thinkpad*) on battery power, this laptop computer must be turned off to allow a depleted primary or auxiliary battery to be replaced with a fresh battery of like kind. This forces the user to go through the intermediate steps of hibernating the system memory, and/or saving all open files on the system and shutdown in an orderly manner. This is a time drain to the productivity of the user as these actions must take place. The also avoids the need of the user to utilize Hibernation, Suspend modes that are sometimes confusing to the uneducated user of Mobile Power Management. By enhancing the system clock battery to hold enough charge (e.g. using a battery with more capacity), the Power Management System software can operate as it does today to detect a low battery condition. However, this additional power reserve in the system clock battery can allow the Power Management System software to hold the system in a "frozen" state for a period of time (e.g. 5 minutes) so that the user has time to exchange the depleted battery with a battery that has sufficient charge capacity. If the user does not complete this exchange in time (or the new battery isn't charged), the system clock battery will contain enough charge to complete a forced hibernation of the system to avoid loss of productivity and data. The circuitry of the computer is enhanced to detect the main battery being removed and/or depleted and to switch over to the system clock battery for power.
