Abstract

Disclosed is a method of ensuring the Plug&Play function for the external floppy disk drive (FDD) by using a conventional parallel port or by using the docking station under the specific operating system, such as Windows98 and Windows2000. This solution utilizes the runtime-event in order for the operating system to recognize the external FDD dynamically. This runtime-event is issued from the system management controller when the external FDD is attached to the system. The hardware-specific signal from the FDD is the trigger for the system management controller to issue the runtime-event. This scenario has been implemented in the ThinkPad T20 series. The following is the outline of the schematics to recognize the external FDD in case of ThinkPad T20. |Parallel |ThinkPad FDD |Port +5V level
