Disclosed is a protective case for a palmtop device that docks with the palmtop device in a way that enables embedded systems to receive power from the palmtop device. This allows a case to serve as more than merely a protective shell. The protective case can be designed with contacts which mate with power contacts on the palmtop device when the protective case is docked with the device. The power made available to the case can then be used to drive embedded systems. One example of such a case would be to have a case that is hinged at the top (such that it opens like a small memo pad). On the inside front cover of this case, there could be an integrated light source that could be used to illuminate the display in lieu of a device's own lighting system that a user may feel is inadequate. Other devices could be integrated into the protective case as well, such as digital temperature gauges, digital clocks, etc.
