In turbomachines having blading with cover bands and labyrinth seals limiting the leakage flow the final cavity of the labyrinth seal is designed so to reduce the losses due to the leakage flow rejoining the main flow of the turbine. As a result of the new cavity design the radial velocity component of the leakage flow is reduced while the cavity, in which mixing losses occur, is reduced in size. This effects a reduction of losses due to secondary flows and the recombining of the flows.
