PTH/SMT Oscillator Adapter

  Disclosed is a circuit for mounting oscillators in SurfaceMountTechnology (SMT) on electronic cards and boards where oscillators in Pin-Thru-Hole (PTH) oscillators are required.

    Years ago it was state-of-the-art to use PTH oscillators in many variations. In the meantime the situation changed. tate-of-the-art today is, to follow the SMT trend and the usage of oscillators in SurfaceMountTechnology. Most of the PTH oscillators are gone End-Of -Live (EOL).

Also the card/board thickness may vary from less than 1.0mm to more than
4.5mm, Vendor oscillator design adds costs of about $ 300 000 for tooling of long leads to their parts. One possibility is an expensive redesign of the existing electronic cards or boards for oscillators in SMT package.

    Due to the fact, that more and more PTH oscillators are End-Of -Live (EOL) and have to be replaced by SMT oscillators, this invention descripts a conversion element, which could transfer SMT oscillators with its own form, fit and function into a PTH oscillator needed footprint.

    The descripted PTH/SMT Oscillator Adapter, which has the advantage of providing a low cost SMT device, which is also quickly and in high volumes available and which has a high flexibility could solve the problem in a very short TurnAroundTime (TAT). For higher flexibility in SMT oscillator footprints, the PTH/SMT Oscillator Adapter will have different sized SMT pads to have the possibility to solder different SMT oscillators with different sizes and forms on the Adapter. In addition the size of this PTH/SMT Adapter stays within the size and the highs of the original PTH oscillator, that an exchange on existing electronic cards and boards is everytime possible.
